Readings by Refugee and Migrant Worker Poets in Malaysia: Emotions of Expatriation
There are some half a million refugees in Malaysia, a manifestation of the world facing its biggest refugee crisis for more than half a century. Refugees live in a legal limbo – they do not have access to legitimate employment, structured education or healthcare. But refugees have powerful voices. And in their writings, themed here as ‘Emotions of Expatriation’, refugee poets look at the pain and anguish of being forced to flee their homes. They reminisce about their childhoods, growing up surrounded by love, early education, a rich culture – they signal what they have lost and the struggle to make a new home, in the face of hostility and yet carrying an inescapable hope for the future.
